Tatting for a baby boy? ~ ¿Frivolité para un varoncito?

My granny used to tatt edgings and embroider super delicate bibs for each baby in the family. Pale blue for boys, pink for girls. They were super dainty…

Mi abuela solía hacer un babero con bordado y puntilla de frivolité para cada recién nacido de la familia.Celeste para los varones, rosa para las nenas, eran el colmo de la delicadeza…

 I wanted to make a gift for a bigger baby boy, though, and dainty was not what I envisioned. This is what I came up with:

The patterns are: Jane Eborall‘s TIAS 2011 plane, and Ellen Lai’s  Sun paperclip I tatted the last one with yarn.

“Amusement” tatted doilly~ Carpeta al frivolité “Amusement”

After a bit of a summer blogging hiatus, I am here today to show you a special piece I made last year.

Luego de un descanso veraniego del blog, hoy vengo a mostrarles una pieza especial que hice el año pasado.

I had shown the work in progress last September, but I had postponed making this post until it was gifted. Here it is now!

¡Ya había mostrado una foto parcial en Septiembre,  pero no había querido publicarla completa hasta haberla regalado. ¡Acá la pueden ver ahora!

The pattern is “Amusement doily”, by Celtess, and the colourful thread is Jess!’s “Tiger Lily-icious”, that she dyed by my own suggestion, and sent me a skein as a thank you – I knew I wanted to pair it with écru and make this doily with it since I opened the package! So thanks again Jess!. It is size 40, but the écru is size 20 in the inner rounds.

El patrón es “Amusement doily”, de Celtess, y el hilo multicolor es “Tiger Lily-icious”, teñido por Jess! cuando hizo un mini concurso para elegir combinaciones de colores, y como eligió la que yo sugerí, me mandó una madeja – Desde que la desempaqueté supe que quería combinarla con un color crudo y hacer este diseño.¡Gracias de nuevo Jess! Su hilo es tamaño 40, pero el crudo es número 20 en las rondas internas.

I do not consider myself much of a “doily person”, but this pattern really called to me. It is simple and fun to tatt, and the result is so elegant!

Las carpetittas no son precisamente mi estilo, pero este diseño me atrajo mucho. ¡Es sencillo y divertido de tejer, y el resultado es tan elegante!

During my silence here I have been knitting quite a bit, and tatting too. I have some more things to share, including designs!  I hope all my readers are having a happy, creative summer or winter!

Mientras no escribí por acá, estuve tejiendo y frivoliteando bastante. Tengo más cosas que compartir, ¡incluyendo algún diseño! ¡Espero que mis lectores estén teniendo un feliz y creativo verano o invierno!

Covered ring zip pulls ~ Tiradores de cremallera con anillos cubiertos

Hace mucho tiempo ya escribí un artículo sobre cubrir anillos plásticos con frivolité. ¡Bueno, me había olvidado lo divertido que es! Hasta que que hice uno, y me copé haciéndolos de nuevo… Acá les dejo  instrucciones para hacerlos traducidas por Wally Sosa de las de Jon Yusoff (link en la parte en inglés del texto) ¡Gracias a las dos!

I am now in the process of designing earrigns – I did not use a pattern for any of the pieces I show today, they are basic simple doodles. The snowflake turned out so good I repeted it with beads and I may write that one up. The earrign design is harder, though. What works in my mind never looks right on thread! So, I make adjustments and start over…

Ahora estoy diseñando unos aros. No usé patrón para ninguna de las piezas que les muestro hoy, son simples “garabatos”. El copo de neive me salió tan lindo que lo repetí con mostacillas y puede ser que lo escriba. Diseñar aros es más dificil, sin embargo. ¡Lo que en mi cabeza parece una buena idea nunca funciona en hilo! Entonces, pienso mejoras y vuelo a empezar…

Square elegance doodad earrings! ~ “Square elegance” aros con colgante

Here is my entry to Diane’s “Doodad double dare“: I did the first rounds of  Frivole‘s “Square elegance” with some subtly variegated size 20 Babylo thread I got in an exchange last year.

He aquí mi respuesta al desafío de Diane de frivoletear algo alrededor de unos cuchuflitos metálicos. Hice las primeras vueltas del “Square elegance” de Frivole con un hilo Babylo no. 20 sutilmente variegado que intercambié el año pasado.

I like this much better than the bigger first try! Don’t you agree? Thanks to everyone for your feedback there – I actually got these tatted for a while but had some technical issues with the photography… Now that those are over, I leave you with a bonus pic!

Not square, but with a doodad… ~ No es cuadrado pero tiene un cuchuflito…

I joined Diane’s “Doodad double dare“, and got square doodads. Perfect for Frivole‘s “Square elegance“, right? But I had to make things hard for myself. I wanted them as earrings, and the whole design looked too big, so I played with it a bit, leaving some parts out. I am more or less pleased with the resulting shape, but my, it is huge! What do you think I should I do, make the other one the same and hope I find someone with a long neck that falls in love with it, or try to further shrink the design on the second one and then redo the first one to match…? I am mighty pleased with the way the subtly variegated size 20 Babylo thread worked up and how neatly I hid my ends… I think I have just enough thread left from the sample I used to make the other one, too…

Me he unido a una de esas cosas que de pronto todos estamos haciendo en el rincón frivolitero de la blogósfera: El desafío de Diane de frivoletiear algo alrededor de unos cuchuflitos metálicos. A mi me tocaron unos cuadrados – Perfectos para hacer el “Square elegance” de Frivole, ¿verdad? Pero tuve que complicarme la vida – los quería hacer aros, y me pareció que el motivo completo iba a ser demasiado grande, así que juegué un poco con el diseño, omitiendo algunas partes, y logré una forma que me gustó ¡pero quedó enrome! ¿que dicen mis lectores, hago el otro igual y cruzo los dedos para que alguien de cuello largo se enamore de ellos, o trato de achicar un poco más el diseño en el siguiente y después rehago este para emparejar…? Me encantó lo bien que quedó el color sutilmente variegado del hilo Babylo no. 20, y lo prolijamente que escondí los extremos del hilo. Creo que usé casi justo la mitad de hilo que tenía, además…

By the way, aren’t the rose shuttles adorable? I traded them with Diane for thread and put them in the photo for scale (they are Clovers) – and to show you how happy I am to have them!

Craft swap ~ Intercambio de manualidades

Here is something I started tatting a while back. I was keeping from posting, because it was a bit of a surprise – for my friend.

Acá hay algunas cositas que empecé  a frivolitear hace un tiempo. No las publicaba porque eran un poco una sorpresa – para mi amiga.

We decided to do a trade – I asked her for one of her gorgeous bags (here is the one she made for herself), and offered tatting. The whole thing was a lot of fun. I had never tatted such a long edging – the pattern is “Eléanor” from Mary Konior’s “Tatting in Lace”, although that design is in itself a reproduction from Riego’s “Tatting Edgings and Insertions”, which can be found in the Antique Pattern Library for free downloading here. I did tweak the stitch counts a bit, trying to stop it from curving – until I surrendered and decided I actually liked the curve. I am looking forwards to how my friend uses it!

Decdimos hacer un trueque – le pedí una de sus maravillosas carteras (acá está la que se hizo para ella), y le ofrecí frivolité. Todo el proceso fue de lo más divertido. Nunca había hecho una puntilla tan larga – el diseño está en el libro “Tatting in Lace” de Mary Konior, aunque ese patrón en particular es en realidad una reproducción de “Tatting Edgings and Insertions” de Riego. Éste útlimo se puede encontrar para descargar gratuitamente  en in la Antique Pattern Library. Jugué un poco con las cantidades de puntos tratando de que no se curvara hasta que me rendí y decidí que me gustaba como quedaba la curva. Tengo muchas ganas de ver como lo usa mi amiga!

I also included two Posy motifs I posted about already, a few stitch counters (similar to these) and two bracelets. I am pretty proud of them, so I’ll make a separate post about them soon.

También incluí dos motivos (Posy) que ya había publicado antes, unos contadores de puntos (parecidos a estos), y dos pulseras. Como estoy muy orgullosa de ellas, tendrán un artículo aparte próximamente.

It is just perfect! To every little detail! I love the owls outside, and the line of birdies inside – and several pockets too, and a place to hook the keychain – I am going to use it a lot! My current knitting project is in there already!

¡Es simplemente perfecta! ¡Hasta el más mínimo detalle! Me encantan los búhos de afuera, y la hilera de pajarito adentro – y que tiene varios bolsillos, y un lugar donde enganchar el llavero – ¡la voy a usar un montón! ¡Mi tejido en curso ya está adentro!

New thread! ~ ¡Hilos nuevos!

Today it is all about the colours!
¡El tema de hoy son los colores!

First off, I dyed some more thread. Which makes my own hand dyed stash quite photogenic, if I may say so myself! I don’t have many repeats of anything, but as “one-of-a-kinds” there is a range of thickness – from crochet thread (aprox. size 3) to size 80! And a colourful lot too – several rainbows, the new ones more intense than the first batch, and a few unique two and three colour combinations.

Para empezar, teñí más hilos. Con lo que mi reserva de hilos teñidos por mí está, modestamente, bastante fotogénica. No tengo muchos ejemplares de cada cosa, pero en “únicos en su especie” tengo hilos de un rango de grosores – desde crochet (aprox. tamaño 3) hasta numero 80. Hay varios arcoiris, los nuevos más intensos que los de la primera tanda, y algunas combinaciones únicas de dos y tres colores.

This are all the new skeins – all mercerized cotton crochet thread – size 20 rainbow, size 40 rainbow, and size 40 “colds” and “warms”. Some of this already has planned recipients, but if you are interested in trying some, drop me a note and we can work something out! I am also planning on dyeing another batch real soon, as I have some colour ideas I want to try.
Estas son las madejas nuevas – todas algodón mercerizado para crochet – arcoiris en tamaño 20 y 40, y “fríos” y “cálidos” en tamaño 40. Algunas tienen destinatario previsto, pero si alguien quiere probarlas, ¡escríbame y arreglamos algo! Tambien tengo previsto hacer una nueva sesión de teñido pronto, porque tengo algunas combinaciones de colores que quiero probar.

The pattern is Posy from Mary Konior’s book “Tatting with Visual Patterns”, which as I have shown you before is just great to test variegated thread… Why am I testing a new thread? Well, because a while back, Jess had a colour inspiration contest and she liked my suggestion! So, she dyed it, and sent me a skein as thank you! My idea was “Tiger Lillycious”, and while I had envisioned a brighter, purer yellow, when worked up it was just perfect, as you can see here. Thank you Jess – as I have said before, you really do magic with your dyes! To all my other readers, if you haven’t seen them yet, do go check her gorgeous threads.

El patrón es Posy del libro “Tatting with Visual Patterns” de Mary Konior, que como ya les mostré hace poco es perfecto para probar hilos multicolores… Y ¿por qué tengo hilo nuevo para probar? Es que hace un tiempo Jess hizo un concurso de inspiración cromática y ¡le gustó mi propuesta! Así que la tiñó, y me mandó una madejita en agradecimiento. Mi idea fue “Tiger Lillycious”, con los colores del lirio naranja, y aunque yo había imaginado un amarillo más brillante y puro, el resultado al tejerlo es simplemente perfecto, como pueden ver. ¡Gracias Jess – como ya te dije, hacés magia con tus tinturas! Y a mis demás lectores, si todavía no los han visto, vayan a ver su maravillosos hilos.

The pattern is Posy from Mary Konior’s book “Tatting with Visual Patterns” and here I show you three I made some months ago to send to Handy Hands for their new Lizbeth gallery, and two I made last week with my hand dyed rainbow thread (the same I used here and here)
Si suelen leer mi blog, ya lo han visto antes. El diseño es Posy del libro “Tatting with Visual Patterns” de Mary Konior y aquí pueden ver tres que hice hace unos meses para la Galería de colores Lizbeth de Handy Hands, y otros dos que hice esta semana con el hilo arcoiris teñido por mí (el mismo que había usado en esto y esto)

My hand dyed size 40 Anchor Mercer crochet – (same thread as next)

As you can see, the colour variegation in my thread keeps working up spectacularly! I wound the thread onto the shuttle from the other end to make the second one with the colours in reverse order.

Como pueden ver, las variaciones de color de mi hilo siguen dando un resultado ¡espectacular! Para el segundo motivo, llené la naveta empezando por el otro extremo del hilo, de modo que el orden de los colores quedara invertido.

And now I have loaded my special shuttle (with size 8 DMC cotton perlé, my favourite color 115) for a simple edging…

Y ahora llené mi naveta especial (con perlé DMC no. 8 en mi color favorito, 115) para una puntilla sencilla…

New Stitch Markers for knitting ~ Nuevos marcadores de puntos para tejer

Escribí sobre mis marcadores de puntos hace tiempo…

This is a special but very simple set I made as a present. Just a ring and single shuttle split ring, with a fun decoration on the second. I hide the start thread end by tatting over the tail for the first few double stitches of the first ring, and use the single shuttle split ring (SSSR) to hide the end. The thread (size 20 Lizbeth “Jelly bean”) makes them super funky and striking!

Este juego es un regalo especial pero super sencillo. Son simplemente un anillo y un anillo dividido de una sola naveta, con un colgantito enhebrado en el segundo. Tejo sobre el extremo del principio y uso la técnica del anillo dividido de una sola naveta (SSSR) para esconder el hilo del final. Con el hilo Lizbeth “Jelly Bean” no. 20, ¡quendan divertidos y llamativos!
